Her period is 5 days overdue. She was out at the W.C.T.U. meeting yesterday afternoon but on her return com- plained of back ache pains in the kidney etc. there is considerable abdominal distension. MONDAY 2 Harry feeling and looking much better this morning: up and dressed. Packed. She had a drive. She was worse in the afternoon and I was away at church TUESDAY 3 In bed most of the day suffering general misery. I had to be away from her all the evening with a little waif. She had a tossing night, though she slept tolerably well. [6] WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1888 General misery still, growing worse towards night. Kept her bed all day THURSDAY 5 Had a wretched night with neuralgic pain everywhere and slight fever. In the morning the flow began but the pain has not abated much and she is vomiting bile. Evan suggests giving her before the next attack doses every three hours of 1/8 Bin - id iod. Hydra[-]g. FRIDAY 6 Harry scarcely slept more than ten minutes at a time last night, and each time some bad dream woke her. I gave her a seidlitz powder, and this morning two enemas of warm water which have given her some relief from her distressing headache Vomited lactated food once. Gave her two pills of aloin & cascara sagrada. [7] SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1888 Harry slept better and is much better this morning, but complains of not seeing distinctly both yesterday and today, and of headache – particularly occipital. Heavy rain all night, rain and fog this morning. SUNDAY 8 Cold and stormy but Harry is much better; She ate a little chicken and cranberry at dinner time, and some toast and milk for tea and sat up in a big chair for half an hour. Eyesight better MONDAY 9 Harry slowly improving, but complains of unequal focussing of her eyes and headache Probably there is some congestion in the head as she has had epistaxis, and the other flow is not free enough and comes in little gushes after pain. [8] TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1888 Stormy day. Harry was dressed most of the day and was brought down to dinner. Disappointed to have no drive in the sleigh; in the late afternoon Mrs McClellan massaged her — and her evening was pleasant to her. Gave her a seidlitz powder and a lavement in the morning, and an aloin and casc. sag. pill at night. So much epithelial matter in the urine that I tested it and found much albumen present. One eye inflamed WEDNESDAY 11 Sharply cold day. Harry dressed and downstairs. Eating pretty well, but her breath very fetid, and her nerves excessively irritable. She complains of rheumatic pains, and is very pale. She slept straight through the night. She felt much better in the afternoon and Evan drove her out on the Highland Road as far as THURSDAY 12 Clear and very cold H. much better: passed some of those long strings supposed to be rectal casts. She had a short sleigh ride and enjoyed it. Mrs McClellan came so late that Harry preferred not to be massaged. [9] FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1888 Terrible storm all night, but the thermometer up to 25º and rain falling and freezing. Harry feels pretty well: was massaged. [10] SATURDAY 14 [No entry] SUNDAY 15 [No entry] MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 1888 Dr Freeman came out to see the a sick child and visited us. He now advises leaving off all medicines and applications unless a little codliver oil and or Freeman Mixture. Harry is terribly thin. As she is now on the up-grade I shall lay this aside temporarily She was massaged. TUESDAY 17 Ther 11 above The wind blew out my Greenhouse stove last night and most of my flowers were frozen dead this morning It blew a blizzard all day and Evans train stuck in the drift and he walked home. WEDNESDAY 18 Ther 12 above Mrs McClellan massaged me and I afterward drove in the cutter with Mother and Evan to prayer meeting it was very cold in Church and about twenty peopl were present. Tom took me a drive down the Kenzua Road [11] THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1888 Ther 12 It still snows and blizzards Tom took me a drive on the Smithport Road The sleighing is splendid FRIDAY 20 Morning Ther 11 Noon 15 Evening 8 Church reception at the Thomson House We all went. The rooms were packed. It was looking as if the snow might stop at dark. I tried the new phaeton cutter SATURDAY 21 Morning Temp 3 above noon 5 above evening 2 below A beautiful cold clear day. I drove Mother up town in the morning and out as far as the Stone house Mrs McClellan massaged me in the afternoon and afterward Evan drove me over by Four brothers in a beautiful but very cold Sunset [12] SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 1888 Morning temp 9 below zero Evening 18 above It was a beautiful clear day but it was very cold in church. Tom drove Mr Arney and the choir in the double sleigh to Jo West Kane I cut nearly the last of my white hyacinths for little Veseys corpse: Bouquet Tendre is showing pink flowers. MONDAY 23 Ther 15 Noon 25 A beautiful dawn was followed by a cloudy day and a snow storm at dusk I drove Mother a little drive Tom let go of the reins near the Barn and Gallegher smashed the cutter. The Chautag[--] met here in the evening. Mrs McClellan rubbed me TUESDAY 24 Morning T 9 above Noon 15 Evening 9 It snowed about an inch and ½ during the night and is still snowing a little. Glorious winter day. I was weighed 91 lbs. Elisha is much displeased with the dranage at the Hotel [13] WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1888 Morning 9 Noon 15 Evening 20 After a cloudy red dawn a tremendous snow storm came up from the east and before we went to bed had snowed nine inches At dinner time we received a telegram that poor little Nancy Kane had died after a three hours illness Mamma packed to go down and got into the train when a telegram from Uncle Pat turned her back. Evan took me a drive up toward Four Brothers from Gabelans and to our horror we had to turn near the farms in such a boggy drift All the trees are coated with white and Tom took a number of photographs WEDNESDAY, FEB’Y 1 Morning Ther 25 Had a wretched night with that hand false rheumatism and feel like an old shoe today. I drove Mother up was after some wall paper in the morning it is a cloudy still day. Elisha went to Smithport this morning. THURSDAY 2 Morning 25 Noon 28 I slept better last night but I feel miserable It is a beautiful clear day and Tom drove me out on the Smithport Road where we met Evan coming from Smithport on the Fl[--] The house is upside down with the papering Mother went to the Sunday service in the evening [16] FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1888 Ther 40 42 Cloudy mild morning, another bad night Took 3 Cotton seed pills It grew into a beautiful balmy day and I drove up town in the afternoon with Mother SATURDAY 4 48 Pouring sleeting thaw all day I slept better and was not quite so miserable We were busy trying to fix up after the paper hanger We were all in very low spirits Hattie is coming Monday SUNDAY 5 It is freezing this morning and the train is stopped It is Communion Sunday but I was not allowed to go to Church [17] MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1888 Still grey day not very cold had the first good night for two weeks. The morning was close and windy by turns and about four in the afternoon we were struck by a Cyclone which blew down a number of our favorite trees and the trap door off the roof Cousin Anne Fitzhugh and Alida came in TUESDAY 29 I took Cousin a drive in the morning it was clearing up rather cold.
